ADL Gazetteer


The ADL Gazetteer is currently unavailable due to a combination of serious hardware and software issues.  The UCSB Library is investigating what efforts will be needed to bring the service back online.  At this time, we cannot offer a estimate as to when this might happen. We sincerely apologize for this interruption in service.

To assist you in your research efforts, we have assembled URLs for obtaining geographic place-name information,  as well as for obtaining existing Gazetteer software and information:

I. Geographic place names of the United States:

To look up specific place names, use the U.S. Geological Survey's GNIS:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/

To download USGS's place-names database,
http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/download_data.ht

II. Geographic place names for other countries:

To look up specific place names- GEOnet:
http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/index.html

Some countries do have their own online gazetteers, for example, for place names of Canada, see:
http://geonames.nrcan.gc.ca/index_e.php

To download the GEOnet place-names database,:
http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/namefiles.htm

Files are provided in Gzipped Tar archives. 

  • gaz_client_jsp.tar.gz- This is the webclient for the gazetteer.
  • gaz_server.tar.gz- The gazetteer server, which handles all database interactions.
  • gazetteer-data.tar.gz- The gazetteer database (aka gazetteer data), provided as a Postgres dump.
  • thesaurus.tar.gz- The ADL feature type thesaurus
